METEORA MONASTERY

photoblink.com

Monastery in the region of Meteora in Central Greece. These huge monoliths are a very rare geological phenomenon. During the period between 11th and 14th century on the top of these rocks were built 24 monasteries, in order to be protected from the bandits and pirates. Today only 6 of them remain renovated in the region, while the rest are abandoned and ruined.

The only access to them was either by a movable wooden bridge (as seen in the left side of the image), or by a big basket coming up and down by a winch mechanism manipulated by the monks on top. Today you can visit some of them. It is an unforgettable experience.

In my #1 example image you can see another one of these monasteries.
